The website for Dick's upcoming DVD version of his book has just been updated.
Here is the link for the SITE and a link for a PROMO CLIP. It's different from the one posted on Cartoon Brew, although it starts out the same...

Why is Richard Williams so reluctant to ever mention the thief?

"Why is Richard Williams so reluctant to ever mention the thief?"

Uh .... well, here's my take on it :

A labor-of-love you worked on for over 25 years is ripped away from you when the finish line is in sight, then it's chopped up into pieces , insipid songs and voice-overs added , and it goes out with your name still on it as the director but you had no control over the final form in which it was released.

If it had only been that black and white....with all respect to Dick, he wasn't quite blameless in losing control over the movie. but since this blog is more about appreciating what did get made, i refrain from commenting further

Andreas,

You're correct, of course, but I'm trying to picture it from Dick Williams's point of view.

I couldn't see how the original question : "Why is Richard Williams so reluctant to ever mention the thief?" wasn't completely obvious.

I was lucky enough to attend one of Richard Williams masterclasses in 1998 in NY. I was just starting out and it was the best investment I've ever made in learning how to animate. I hope to buy these DVD's also.

Thank you for having this blog. The information and artwork here is really inspiring.

yes, David, you 're right. thats more than likely his perspective and the reason why he put all things Thief behind him. We were also lucky enough to have Dick lecture to us a few times. I was very excited about the dvd set, but may have to rethink...that pricetag is a bit high and animation not the sure paycheck it once was for me.

I asked Dick about the Thief being released at a talk in 2001 when Disney/Roy Disney had bought the rights to it (?), and he was completely open and honest about it, and didn't seem annoyed or embarassed. He said that hopefully one day it'd be released as he'd intended it, even in its unfinished lintest form - pretty much what Garrett Gilchrist has done anyway!

And yes - WOW those DVDs are crazily expensive! Would love to watch them but it'd have to be if someone else bought them... Considering how it mimics the book very very closely, it seems stupidly expensive when you can buy the book and read about it for as little as £8!!!

It looks like a musthave in the long run..but for now the pricetag makes it unaffordable for me....
